Bicycle Thief

Summary:

A unemployed man named Antonio lives in Italy in which he struggles to provide for his family during postwar times. During the film Antonio has finally been given an opportunity to work hanging posters around the city however he needs a bike to do so. Antonios wife suggests selling the nice sheets they had so that he would be able to buy the bike he needs. As things were looking up on Antonios first day a thief steels his bike. As the movie continues Antonio and his sun go on an adventure through Rome to find the stolen bike. Antonio tells the police about the bike but sadly the police can not help due to lack of evidence. As Antonio and his son face defeat they sit outside of a football stadium filled with people. Antonio then sees an unguarded and unchained bike. He goes to the bike and tries to steal it however the crowed around the area forces Antonio off the bike while his son watches. The owner of the bike decides not to press charges and lets Antonio go. Antonio trying to hold back tears his son holds his fathers hand and walks home.

This movie was directed by Vittoria De Sica and in the film it sheds a light on Italian neorealism. The film has elements of classical Hollywood narrative however when it came to the ending the Hollywood narrative seemed far out of site due to the sad ending of going back home empty handed unable to provide for the family once again. During the film it uses camera techniques such as shot-reverse shot, tracking shot, and a tilt shot.
