The crime of padre amaro

A romantic drama made in 2002 directed by Carlos Carrera. The United States tabled this movie as “Morally offensive” because of multiple actions that occur in the movie such as The movie shows a priest breaking the law, Amaro helps Amelia to get an illegal abortion, and sheds a light on the Mexican institution. When looking at the reasons why the movie is considered a morally offensive movie you sit back and think about how many discussions can be brought to light by this movie. The significance of the movie is how it is a controversial and the portrayal of religion is uncommon for a movie however with that it still was a very successful movie.

Summary:

A new priest falls(Amaro) falls in love with a 16 year old girl(Amelia) who is extremely religious. Amelia seems to take after her mom who was having an affair with father Benito. In the movie it shows father Benito receiving financial help for the Mexican drug cartel however is was doing this to pay for a new clinic. As Amaros and Amelias love life heats up Amelia gets pregnant and Amaro convinced her to get an illegal abortion. The illegal abortion causes Amelia to die leaving amaro to lie about the whole situation.
