Boy

Boy is a movie made is 2010 and directed by Taika Waititi. This movie has an ongoing debate if it is considered fourth cinema or not. This was shot in New Zealand and gave the boy a tribal background.

“neglected children, absent fathers, bullying, minors running drugs, gang members, violence, swearing, sexual references, kids boozing and smoking dope and a mother dying in childbirth” some critics believe this overshadows the tribal past. Boy being Michael jackson’s fan also raises concern by making the movie more focused on other characteristics than the roots of the tribe. When the film included michael jackson in the movie it was a risk because of the recent death of michael however some would say that it would shape the time period and make it more in a way relatable.

The crime of padre amaro

A romantic drama made in 2002 directed by Carlos Carrera. The United States tabled this movie as “Morally offensive” because of multiple actions that occur in the movie such as The movie shows a priest breaking the law, Amaro helps Amelia to get an illegal abortion, and sheds a light on the Mexican institution. When looking at the reasons why the movie is considered a morally offensive movie you sit back and think about how many discussions can be brought to light by this movie. The significance of the movie is how it is a controversial and the portrayal of religion is uncommon for a movie however with that it still was a very successful movie.

Summary:

A new priest falls(Amaro) falls in love with a 16 year old girl(Amelia) who is extremely religious. Amelia seems to take after her mom who was having an affair with father Benito. The feel of this movie is to be known as enchantment however with the editing and with the filming to the characters the film can be perceived as a bit claustrophobic. With angles of the characters shot behind with them facing away from the camera and taken by one single angle the camera focuses on one character at a time. Wong the director of the movie shoots without shot reverse shot when characters are talking and creates a imbalance with how the viewer will view the movie.

The five obstructions

The first obstruction:

Remaking the film however this time the challenges Leth has is having a shot no longer than twelve frames while answering questions that occurred in the original film while also filming in Cuba with being creative with no sets aloud while filming.

The Second obstruction:

Leth plays the role of “The man” while filming in an unideal place while insuring no viewers finding out where he shot the movie at. The last challenge Leth faced was to include the meal from the movie however the movie was not to include the woman. The second obstruction was failed to be completed due to Leth using a translucent screen which showed some of the place he was filming which means viewers knew where he filmed.

The third obstruction:

Von Trier gave Leth a option to redo the second obstruction or to try to remake the film anyway of his choosing. Leth chose to remake the film using a split screen technique.

The fourth obstruction:

Leth seeks help from Bob Sabiston to help with the challenge of making the film into a cartoon. The cartoon movie dipped into being more of an animation however Von Trier accepted the work.

The final and the fifth obstruction

Leth created a voiceover for the fifth obstruction while Von Trier created the fifth obstruction. Von Trier also scripted what Leth said in the voiceover making it in leth’s perspective.

Overview:

The five obstructions is a game between Lars Von Trier and Jorgen Leth. Von Trier also challenged Leth because he wanted Leth to step out of his comfort zone and that he did. Von Trier challenge Leth to remake The Perfect Human in five different ways thus created The Five Obstructions. The five obstructions although is not a Dogme film it still embraces the common motivation for the film.

This is a story inspired by Japanese culture and history. The movie is in black and whit. The movie had multiple cameras and camera cutting closer to a group while using slow motion. Kurosawa the director wanted the movie to stay new while making the movie long and he did this by making sure new movements were changed each time a fight were to occur. The film has a Hollywood action take on the movie however still keeping it historical.

This movie was directed by Vittoria De Sica and in the film it sheds a light on Italian neorealism. The film has elements of classical Hollywood narrative however when it came to the ending the Hollywood narrative seemed far out of site due to the sad ending of going back home empty handed unable to provide for the family once again. During the film it uses camera techniques such as shot-reverse shot, tracking shot, and a tilt shot.

The man with a movie camera

Summery:

This film is a montage that was taken to show the life of the Soviet Union. The film is a montage consisting in multiple film shots that shows off filming techniques. The film films almost everything form the cameraman making the film to the film itself. The movie showed the life in the Soviet Union while also showing the documentary being done also. The director Dziga Vertov included a lot of filming strategies to make this film such as rapid fire montage, spilt screens, and the use of odd angles. This movie has no narration and is pure film. The film even includes the film being edited. This film is a bit unusual however it shows great exposer to different film techniques. This would be a great film to show and to teach about filming angles and such. The film is filmed in different cities but it looks like it was filmed in one while giving and showing the viewers a well put together documentary. This film can be described as inspirational and also ahead of its time. The movie uses camera techniques that were not yet known to the filming industry which made some of the shots more rare and difficult to film. The film used a more emotional grabbing strategy which is called the Kuleshov Effect. The Kuleshov Effect is when emotional shots are placed beside ordinary shots that do not give the viewer emotional reactions. The reason behind this is because it will give the view more of an emotional reaction. The shots side by side will be telling a bigger picture and message to the viewers. While using this strategy of film one more important aspect of it is the music which can shape the way the viewers see the scene.

400 Blows

400 Blows summary: The movie takes place in Paris in 1950 and is a story about a boy named Antoine Doinel. When viewed from other characters in the movie Antoine is a troublemaker which means he is watched more than others, however Antoine does get into trouble a lot with lying steeling and skips school a lot which makes other characters view him this way. When it comes to Antoines bond with his parents he feels like his father puts up with him and his mother despises him. One day during school Antoine gets into trouble with the teacher even though other kids did not. Antoine then runs away from school and “Borrows” his fathers type writer. When Antoine try to put it back his father finds out he calls the police which makes Antoine go to jail. Later in the judges chamber Antoine finds out that his father is not his biological father and his mother agrees to send him to a concentration camp. Some time passes Antoine has had enough after seeing a therapist which he had to watch what he said to and with the concentration camp itself. He figures out a way of escaping which leads to the last scene. The last or final scene is a long shot of Antoine running away although some may say it is too long I feel like it gives the viewers anticipation of Antoine being caught or not. As the shot of Antoine running away comes to and end Antoine is on the beach and seems content however the last seconds of the movie ends in a freeze-frame where Antoine turns around and the camera zooms on Antoine’s face leaving the audience in question of what Antoine just saw.
